“You Exist. That is Your Permission.”

Happy Monday, HB!

I am in love with Jaiya John’s “Daughter Drink This Water.” This subject line of this newsletter is a direct quote from this ode to self-love. Every time I read it (even re-reading parts that I have read before), I am blown away by how it pulls at my heartstrings. In other words, check it out and let me know what you think.

If you were raised in the United States, you were brought up in a world of permission. You learned to say please and thank you. You raised your hand in class and asked to go the restroom. You waited your turn to speak at the dinner table. You were indoctrinated with the idea that someone will tell you when it’s time to proceed. You learned that the outside world will tell you where to go and what to do. You simply must follow the rules and play along. That’s how you get ahead. You work hard and receive your A. There is always a definite answer on your tests.

Then you grow up and realize that life doesn’t actually work that way. People who have barely started at the company get promoted within months while you’ve been quietly slaving at your desk for the past five years. People less qualified than you start their business and thrive while you secretly envy their ballsy gusto (from the desk where you quietly slave). People boldly share who they are with the world and give zero phucks about who doesn’t like them while you try to please everyone who matters so that they’ll love you back.

You realize that there aren’t any definite answers. If you get your MBA, you learn to love the phrase, “It depends,” because the truth is it really does depend.

“What’s your point, LaTisha?”

Well, my dear HB, just as Jaiya John points out in his book, “You exist. That is your permission.” No more letting life pass you by. No more living the same day over and over again. No more self-bashing. No more shit you don’t like.

That’s not what God had in mind for you when you were born. How do I know? Because you showed up to life. That is your permission.

It’s time to figure out what song your soul wants to sing and sing it with abandon, not caring what other people think of you. It’s your life, not theirs.

I hereby give you full permission to love yourself, just the way you are. I give you full permission to do what feels good and to stop doing stuff you loathe. I give you permission to explore what makes you feel delighted. I give you permission to say NO and set boundaries. I give you permission to do whatever the hell you want with your one precious life.

After all, you exist. That’s your permission.

Now it’s your turn. Hit reply and let me know what your soul song is. Be specific as possible and give me one action step you’re going to take this week to rock out.

I’m cheering for you. Like every cell in your body is vibrating with peace.
